Stairwell and Landing: Botanicae

Design Inspiration
A dramatic stairwell and expansive upstairs landing are conceived and arranged as art exhibition and gallery to immerse the viewer within a modern rendition of a historical botanical folio. Titled Botanicae, the walls are painted a custom black pigment representing the artist’s process, setting off botanical photographs taken by Elina Frumerman creating “portraits” of the local flora and fauna.

Botanical photographs by Elina Frumerman were taken within the city limits of San Francisco in natural morning light, isolated against physical black backdrops. Accompanying each framed photograph is the Latin name of each plant, its country of origin, its San Francisco location.

Working with the SF Botanical Library, artist Elina Frumerman produced a limited edition large-format portfolio-catalogue for Botanicae, featuring 30 flowers and plants with mini-histories of each subject.

Flanking the entrance to the gardens and before the circular staircase are placed two relief carved marble sculptures resting on marble plinths created by the artist Yoko Kubrick for this exhibition. Titled Circe and Sappho, the foliate forms reinforce the Botanical themes of this presentation.
